BRIEF
Wyndham Central College wanted to upgrade their central walkway and seating area by providing a new roof structure over this space. This covered space was designed to provide a waterproof link between buildings, widening out at one end to cover the seating/passive area. The original area was very exposed to the elements which made it uncomfortable for students and staff and resulted in very limited use of the space.
OUR APPROACH
The final design was developed as a skillion steel roof structure to match the style of surrounding buildings and simplify the stormwater management. The end of the structure widens out into a custom end cantilever which mirrors the layout of the existing garden and paving edges below it and maximises the shade coverage. The use of a cantilevered end keeps the posts from obstructing the flow of the area which also minimises the risk of them becoming a hazard.
OUTCOME
The addition of extra seating and synthetic grass under the structure has completely transformed the space and it is now a popular and well used area in the school for staff and students! The selection of Colorbond finishes matches to the surrounding buildings, and along with the very robust hot dip galvanised structural steelwork, has provided the college with a very durable structure.
